Home is Here

With the changing of the guard at PBS Hawaii, our board wanted to see some new content creation, specifically the launch of a new program. I sat down with the VP’s of the station to determine their vision for the show, and was met with “we don’t really know. Do your best.”

After spinning my wheels for a bit, I brought together a group of creatives across the station to help me ideate. Their insight was helpful, especially given many members’ prior experience with broadcast television and graphic design. They helped me shift my approach from iconography to word marks. Big mahalo to Todd Fink, Jesse Macadangdang, Brent Keane, and Jon Jenks, all excellent at what they do.

Below are some wordmarks I brought forward.

After testing multiple word marks, we finally narrowed it down to our logo, Home is Here.

The logo was only the beginning of launching Home is Here. We had a direction, now we needed the collateral to back it up.

To support the episodes, I collaborated with the content and production teams to create a modular mogrts for the lower thirds, created in After Effects and implemented in Premiere, and conceptualized compositions for the end credits, then delivered assets for the end credits of each episode.

Launching the new show was a full-station effort, and I worked with multiple departments on different sides of the project to support the launch. While I was working with Production and Content, I also supported our Advancement department with collateral for our virtual screening event. I designed physical and digital invites and thank-you cards. I also worked to design the packaging for our Pau Hana boxes, sent to donors/invitee's to arrive ahead of our virtual screening.

For our Communications department, I pitched and mocked up the concept for a map tagged with audience stories and episode locations, created the map skin, and coordinated with our website contractor to execute the concept. I also created digital ads for external media, welcome and mahalo cards for the virtual screening itself, and, of course, a cover and front-page spread in our February 2022 program guide.

Now that the show is up and running, I assist where I can by creating illustrations and designs for use in certain segments, Kia Manu illustrations created for our Hawaiian Featherwork segment. I also created and managed our Communications team SOP guide for Home is Here, recording our current approaches and strategies for our online content.
